Creating FTP accounts in CPanel
Posted by Tony W Howden on 18 March 2013 01:17 PM

The main user account to access CPanel will automatically have FTP access.

Creating a specific FTP account for loading images or a sub-site is more secure than giving out yoru main account username and password.

In the CPanel search for FTP and select the FTP Accounts icon.

Adding the new account is simply a case of follow the prompts. Just make sure you choose the directory for uploads/downloads wisely.

CPanel will offer the suggested file path within the public_ftp or public_html directories that already exist. You can also create a new directory from the / root directory for your account.

  • Use a directory within the public_ftp directory if the purpose is to share files with your team or clients.
  • Use a directory within the public_html directory if the purpose is to publish the images or documents from your website.
  • Use a directory within the root or / directory if the purpose is to maintain a confidential area specific to the named account.
